Recent Political Developments in South-West Nigeria

It is quite interesting looking at the recent political developments in the south-west region of Nigeria.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were determined to continue and consolidate their hold on the region which was previously under the control of Alliance for Democracy (AD).
The events that followed the 2007 general elections were have been particularly interesting to follow as the issues evolved.
The PDP did their best, used their best strategies and stopped at nothing to take over Lagos State but all their efforts ended in futility as the incumbent ruling party Action Congress (AC) matched them word for word, rally for rally and also Naira for Naira. All in a bid to frustrate PDP's efforts to win over Lagos which they succeeded.
Similar electoral contests were witnessed in the other western states, but in most of them PDP was declared winner. But this was not the end of the matter as several legal battles ensued at the various Electoral Tribunals. It is the fall out of the results from these Electoral Tribunals that has been interesting and the results have put PDP in a very tight situation as far as their control of the region is concerned.
Only recently about three weeks ago the Judiaciary declared Olusegun Mimiko the rightful winner of the 2007 gubernetorial elections in Ondo state, and asked his opponent in the election from PDP who was declared winner to immediately vacate office and Mimiko to be sworn in immediately.
Also, in Ekiti state Segun Oni was also removed from office by the judiciary and a new re-run election was ordered to take place. PDP is in a very precarious situation here because the AC is determined to do all that it takes to win that election especially now that PDP has fallen out with so many of its initial members in the state.
Similar legal battles were also witnessed in Oyo and Osun states were the PDP candidates escaped by whiskers. Although one cannot say if these matters have been exhaustively concluded.
On the other hand it is a good thing that our Judiaciary has become bold enough to deliver such landmark judgements, people can certainly be more confident to go to the polls now than before knowing well that they can get justice if attempts are made on their rightful mandates. I think this is a good development for our Justice system and our country.
It is also good that the PDP is recieving this kind of competition or challenge, the party would be forced to sit up and ensure that their elected members in whatever capacity stand by the principles of good governance and rule our people with extreme care if they must continue in power. This is more or less a wake up call for them.
We are also expecting to see this kind of competitions and political challenges in the other geo-political zones where the ruling PDP seems to hold sway.
This should also encourage us the citizens that our votes are counting now so we should always endeavour tobe patriotic people who will go out and vote whenever the opportunity comes.
We are still watching to see the next things that may ensue.
Thanks so much, have a very wonderful day. Endeavour to post a comment before you go.
Humbly Yours,
Joseph Iyongo

  1. PDP has a stronger foundation which keeps her longer in a fight. If only the men in other parties will stand their grounds and raise their heads for a longer time, we are sure to have a fair fight in the future where the people's choice count. solomonthrone.blogspot.com
